A KSR Success Story - Winter 2009

On birthdays, most people expect to receive various types of gifts as they celebrate their annual milestones. However, Bryan Phan, a recent graduate of the University of Massachusetts, obtained an unexpected birthday present – an opportunity to expand his skill sets through a new position with a research facility in Boston.

At the time, the facility was searching for entry-level lab technicians who not only possessed a lot of energy, but had creative and innovative ideas as well. According to Kelly Scientific Resources senior recruiter, Stavros Cholidis, Phan had little industrial experience. However, his dynamic personality, as well as his past experiences in laboratories, ensured he would be a good fit for the organization.

"As a biochemist student, he was intensively trained in laboratory procedures," said Cholidis. "He had experience in techniques such as DNA extraction and chromatography, which are vital assets for various types of laboratory settings."

While he was searching for employment opportunities, Phan posted his resume in Kelly Scientific Resources’ database. Cholidis quickly noticed Phan’s past experiences, as well as his desire to work within the scientific industry in order to help others. As a result, Cholidis began to look for possible opportunities for Phan within the Boston area.

One week after Phan posted his resume, Cholidis received a rather interesting phone call – a hiring manager from a research facility in Boston was interested in obtaining new talent. Right away, Cholidis thought about Phan.

"When Bryan first posted his resume online, I did not know of any entry-level opportunities that matched his skill sets and past work experiences," said Cholidis. "However, I did keep his resume, hoping that an opportunity would soon arise. Luckily, I heard from the research facility only days after Bryan first posted his resume."

"With the help of Kelly Scientific Resources, Bryan’s job search was much easier than it would have likely been if he had only looked for positions on his own," said Cholidis. "When Bryan posted his resume, I knew exactly what types of opportunities he wanted to pursue within the industry. Therefore, I was able to help Bryan find a satisfying position that will help him positively impact other people well into the future."

Meanwhile, as Cholidis helps individuals like Phan attain meaningful positions within the scientific industry, he is able to not only supply highly-talented and enthusiastic employees to organizations, but also positively impact the industry as a whole.

"In the past, I have had various opportunities to not only change, but to also improve people’s lives," said Cholidis. "Every day, I strive to help candidates achieve their career objectives. However, I never would have imagined that I would help someone find a rewarding position on their birthday."

Finally, as individuals, like Phan, continue to find new opportunities within the field, various unemployed scientists may receive renewed hope, knowing that employment opportunities are still available in the scientific industry.

"Success stories like Bryan’s certainly provide hope to unemployed individuals who are searching for opportunities in a harsh economic environment," said Cholidis. "As unemployed individuals continue to find new positions with help from recruiters, it seems that the hard work of recruitment is certainly well worth the effort."
